Science of Reading

Why Science of Reading (SOR) in Byron?

We want to cultivate all our students to be successful readers. That begins in our earliest grades by providing the best possible instruction to become a reader for life. Research show that structured, sequential phonics & phonological awareness instruction provides the strongest foundation for most students.

What is Science of Reading?

An evidence-based best practice approach for teaching foundational literacy skills called Structured Literacy from comprehensive body of research that encompasses years of study. With explicit, systematic phonics instruction, every student can access the same knowledge and skills to become a good reader.

What is Orton-Gillingham Comprehensive Training?

Orton-Gillingham systematically teaches phonics, where students develop knowledge and skills about how the alphabet works to become expert decoders. Children can then apply the knowledge they learn to decode and encode new words. This training, completed by all TK-2 teachers, supports instruction of students in word recognition skills (e.g., phonology, decoding, spelling).

What is Morphology Plus Training?

In 2023-2024, all Byron general and special education teachers grades 3-6 will complete this training. It focuses on providing instructional support for students who can read and spell but continue to struggle with language comprehension. Teachers learn about instruction in morphology, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
