Byron Institute for Independent Study

Dear Byron Union School District Families:

Welcome back to the 2021-2022 school year! We are excited to start this school year with students back at school for a full day. While we are still waiting on the final guidelines for starting the school year, what we do know is that students will get to come back full time, having lunch as well as recess for all students.

While most students will return to their neighborhood school, we are letting you know about another school option we have as a school district.

  • Byron Institute for Independent Study: For the 2021-2022 school year, BUSD is offering an Independent Study option to students and families whose health would be put at risk by in-person instruction, as determined by the parent or guardian. This option provides the majority of the instruction through the digital online courseware program Acellus. Content is aligned to grade level standards. Students in grades TK-3 will have daily synchronous instruction in one content subject area. Students in grades 4-8 will have a daily live interaction and weekly synchronous instruction. “Synchronous instruction” means “classroom-style instruction or designated small group or one-on-one instruction.” “Live interaction” is interaction between the student and educational staff for the purpose of maintaining school connectedness. If your student is enrolled in the Byron Institute for Independent Study school, they will no longer be enrolled at a school site. A student may transition back to in-person learning at any point during the year, however school placement is based on enrollment and availability of classroom space. BUSD will have a plan to return students to the classroom within five instructional days. Parents must complete the Independent Study Enrollment Form and turn it into the District Office.  This form will be available on the district website on Friday, July 23, 2021.

If you want your child to return to their neighborhood school, you do not have to do anything. If you are interested in information about the Byron Institute for Independent Study prior to completing the enrollment forms, please complete the Interest Form using by the link below.  Availability for the program is determined by space, and in this case, space is not physical space, but staffing capabilities.
